Eddie Ross...before & after

so awhile ago i wrote about how i was having a dilemma about painting "antiques"...well, thanks to eddie ross (martha/ top design coolio), i have now decided that painting is OK. i adore what he has done with this secretary- too freaking cute. it looks awesome and makes me want to grab some primer and get to work right away (only i don't know if it's good to paint when you have had some wine in your system)....i think i have moved away from wanting to paint my DR chairs and am now focused on my china cabinet....if only i was a good painter....

I must say that this secretary looks amazing painted. I think painting antiques is okay. It does depend on what the piece is of chores. If it is a cupboard for Quebec with an original finished they you would be crazy to paint it but if it is just an average piece then no problem. It's kind of like the dilemma of painting old woodwork in a house, it looks so much fresher and cleaner looking painted out. Another thing is when you paint out dark stained furniture to a lighter colour it shows off the detail much better.

That came out looking great. If you are about to jump into the throws of painting furniture, maybe it's best to do it WITH wine in your system;-) I tried once but lost interest half way through project... the piece remained half painted for months!

I had a secretary just like that - painted it a french blue and used it as a changing table which worked really well. In the chicken wire top shelves, I had wee items on display- silver rattlers, baby cups and photos. Then we moved and the piece no longer worked anywhere, plus having twins meant a lot of diapers and I still think of secretaries and diapers. Ha!

Painting "real" antiques is definitely not a good idea but I don't think this secretary is that old or rare so I say paint away.
It looks 100% prettier & probably holds more value as a painted decorator piece than as an antique.
I have a question-how do you change clear glass to mirrored glass like this? LOVE that!

Wow, that's amazing- it looks like a whole new piece! I am trying to get motivated to paint a few pieces in my house also..but I have zero patience for painting! I admire those who are good at it.

I have a very similar piece in my living room and I have to say I think I like it better in white. The repainted version looks amazing!
